I must admit that throughout this time, including my university years, I have experienced various anxieties and feelings of inadequacy, much like many of you. While I have managed to reduce my anxiety over time, learning to cope with the sense of inadequacy took longer.

Technology evolves every day—every moment, in fact—without pause. If we attempted to keep up with every new development in software, we would have to abandon everything else. Naturally, this constant evolution leads to never-ending worries about what to learn next.

Let’s be clear on one thing: you are not required to learn or master every new technology. You only need to acquire what is relevant to your job when it is necessary. Your priority should be evaluating the present and making the most of your current role and learning opportunities.

If you are unsure where to start, here’s a roadmap to help you.

1. Master One Core Skill

If you are at the beginning of your career as a software developer, start by identifying the fundamental technologiesrequired for your field. Once you decide on your specialisation, focus on mastering the core technologies associated with it.

For example, if you work in back-end development, you must choose a primary programming language and commit to mastering it fully. Let’s say your choice is Java—then you need to learn Java inside out, covering all its intricacies.

Do not deceive yourself by constantly switching between languages. Unless a compelling reason forces you to change, hopping from one language to another is nothing more than a waste of time. If you master one language well, learning another becomes significantly easier because the fundamental principles remain the same.

Thus, at the beginning of your career, pick a language, stick to it, and resist the temptation to jump from one technology to another.

2. Keep Up with Industry Trends

While I encourage you to specialise in one area, that does not mean ignoring everything else. Make it a habit to stay informed about industry trends by following blogs, publications, and technology news.

You do not need to become an expert in every new trend, but simply knowing what is happening in the industry will set you apart from those who do not.

A Practical Approach:

Every quarter, set yourself two key learning areas:

📌 Your area of specialisation: A topic you want to deep dive into and master (e.g. Java).

📌 A technology to follow: A broader trend that you want to understand conceptually (e.g. Kubernetes).

For your specialisation area, you might read a technical book. For the trend topic, reading articles and watching videos will usually suffice.

3. Invest in Education & Certifications

If you are serious about deepening your expertise, consider taking a professional course or obtaining a globally recognised certification. While certifications are often debated, some—such as Oracle’s Java Certification—are valuable additions to your CV.

4. Leverage Social Media Effectively

Social media’s impact is undeniable. Following the right accounts can be both informative and motivating. It allows you to:

Developing a habit of writing, regardless of length, will:
